Records are my portal

Travelling the world without stepping on a plane is a thing. Vintage world music on vinyl records is my portal ⛩

My first ever self-bought vinyl was ‘Herb Albert and his Tijuana Brass Band’ - a 50c score from an op shop crate. Little did I know, this would define the style of music I find sooo flippin’ exciting on record.

Being a treasure-hunter at second-hand stores from way back, I kept finding absolute world music gems for next to nothing.

Now when I go to record fairs, I immediately hone in on the world music and exotica sections.

My heart always skips a beat when I see world music in the mix.

Through these discs, I hear the heart and soul of diverse cultural expression. I hear languages and stories and rhythms that convey the essence of people globally.

My world is expanded because I get to learn about the human experience in this very analogue and high-fidelity way.

Truly, it’s like being at the WOMAD festival in my lounge room, with me dancing and singing up in new exotic ways 👯‍♀️

It feeds my wanderlust through deep diversity while valuing these old-school pieces of technology which still sound so clear and so good.

PLUS: The cover sleeves. The art. The photography. The write-ups.

Happy spinning!
💜🌻
